Citizens attend the Theater to be entertained and forget their cares. This increases your city's happiness. Happier citizens don't mind taxes as much. Every level increased in the Theater will increase citizen happiness by 2% or 3% (varies with level) which means you may then increase the amount that they are taxed by 2% or 3% and thus earn more gold per hour!
The Theater is also where you can view any quest movies or "Quest Highlights", which are listed here.
This is building is only useful during the very early levels of the game. (See Note at bottom for a player's personal experience using the Theater.)

The common information on this Wiki is that the Theater is only useful at the very beginning of the game. This sentiment is based off the viewpoint of the Theater's "happiness" boost. But there is another factor to consider if the Theater is indeed useful only within the early weeks of gameplay or after a few months. This other factor is "exceedingly high taxation"(EHT). Is EHT important deep into the game? Consider this variable.
After you build & research all the necessities that require huge amounts of gold, using the Theater to ultra-boost your gold reserve for that purpose is unnecessary. However, using EHT is still beneficial for purchasing high-priced items on Trade, sending huge gold to new, "poor" alliance members, etc. In fact, a member in a certain alliance proposed to focus his gameplay on being the alliance's gold-earning hub in exchange for other resources to build his army. The crux is he built only farms & lumber in his City's fields to feed (his troops) and upgrade (his homes). With an exceedingly high population (before troop training) he was able to accumulate an 8 digit figure of gold.
The end result (after several months of game playing) no member in his alliance has to worry about gold-related builds & researches. New members are able to get huge lumps of gold to build their cities & outposts. How would such a scenario benefit you deep into the game? Well, like him, your city & outposts can be protected with hundreds of elite (reinforcement) troops provided by your alliance members in exchange for you funding their gold-related researches. Such a reality would not be possible by any other means except using rubies to buy gold.
The Theater can be used months deep into the game to gain a huge gold reserve in order to suppport alliance members. With that said, the Theater is most useful in peaceful, non-PvP alliances and single players who are clever enough to use it to a specific knack. Its "usefulness" should be determined by you not by any writer on this Wiki. Because there are different results if different tactics are employed.
